About the Specialty

The field of otolaryngology, also known as ear, nose, and throat (ENT), emerged as otologists (specialists of ear disease) and laryngologists (specialists of the throat, nose and chest) joined as a field in the early 1800s. There were many advancements in the care of patients with ear, nose, and throat disorders, including head and neck cancer, over the 19th and 20th centuries by early pioneers in the field and visionary surgeons.

A greater understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology; the introduction of new and better imaging techniques; and the development of surgical techniques and technology, such as microscopes, endoscopes, and other equipment to help specific disease processes; led to the modern field of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery.

Otolaryngology—head and neck surgeons treat all the disorders of the ears, nose, throat, head and neck, except for diseases of the eyes (ophthalmologists) and the brain and spine (neurosurgeons).
